Glass

Glass is made of silica sand, limestone and sodium carbonate. Most glass can be recycled. Some glass such as mirror glass and crystal cannot be recycled because of its high lead content.

Accepted for Recycling

  • Clear, green, brown, and blue glass bottles and jars only.
  • No other types of glass and no broken glass can be accepted.

Preparation

  • Remove all caps and corks, then rinse.

We process over 12,000 tonnes of glass each year. This is about 450 loads of the big trucks we use to transport it to the remanufacturing plant in Auckland. If we put it all on a netball court, it would make a pile 58 metres high. This is about the height of a 10-storey building.
